Da cidade de Brescia, na Lombardia,onde ficamos para o European wine bloggers Conference, subimos em direção ao Trentino-Alto Adige, precisamente para a cidade de Tramina. Produtores locais nos contam que o nome Gewurztraminer significa “uva aromática da região de Tramina”. Não há nenhuma documentação oficial de que a uva seja daqui, mas, de todas as maneiras, a uva é icônica na região.
From the city of Brescia, in Lombardy, where we stayed for the European Wine Bloggers Conference, we went up into the Trentino-Alto Adige, precisely to the city of Traminer. Local producers tell us that the name Gewurztraminer means ‘aromatic grape from Traminer region”. There is no official documentation that the grape is from here, but in every way, the grape is iconic in the region.Traminer é uma vinícola que trabalha em um sistema de cooperativa bastante interessante. Na verdade, todos os colaboradores, 170 famílias, aproximadamente 250 pessoas, são investidores. Eles põem seu dinheiro na empresa e participam dos projetos, que incluem treinamento para melhoria do cultivo, enologia, entre outros temas. Isto faz com que se comprometam com a empresa, sintam-se parte dela. Vendem suas uvas para a empresa que, por sua vez, garante produzir grandes vinhos aplicando as melhores técnicas enológicas e viticulturais, posiciando os vinhos, depois, no mercado. Os produtores que trabalham melhor e garantem a qualidade das uvas, recebem mais por isso.
Traminer is a winery that works in a very interesting cooperative system . In fact, all colaborators , 170 families, about 250 people, are investors. They put their money in the company and participate in projects that include, training to improve the cultivation, enology, among other topics. This makes them more committed with the company, and they feel part of it. They sell their grapes to the company, which in turn ensures production of great wines by applying the best enology and viticulture techniques , and position the wines well in the market. The producers that work best and ensure the quality of the grapes receive more for it.Para se ter uma idéia, um hectare de vinha pode ser comprado de 6 a 35 mil euros, dependendo da qualidade. Alguns dos vinhedos estão em biodinâmica, uma pequena porcentagem, mais experimental que outra coisa. Meus colegas bloggers europeus, principalmente mais do norte da Europa, faziam perguntas obcecadas sobre cultivo orgânico e biodinâmico, deixando evidente uma espécie de curiosidade febril. Mas, o que fica evidente em ambientes como esta região, é que falar em “orgânico” é secundário pelo fato de que sempre trabalharam em bastante sintonia com a natureza, usando métodos pouco invasivos de tratamento de doenças do vinhedo.
To get an idea, a hectare of vines can be purchased from 6 to 35 thousand euros, depending on quality. Some of the vineyards are biodynamic, a small percentage, more experimental than anything else. My fellow European bloggers , especially the ones from further north, were obsessed with questions about organic and biodynamic farming, making it a sort of feverish curiosity. But what is evident in environments such as this region is that talking about “organic” is secondary due to the fact that it seems that they always worked well with a respect for nature, using invasive methods minimally for treatment of diseases of the vineyard.
Vinhedos da Tramin
Trabalham várias uvas brancas, mas a Gewurztraminer é uva icônica da vinícola, dando vinhos cheios de expressão e mineralidade. Os vinhedos estão perto dos Alpes, e de algumas regiões vemos seus picos. O solo vulcânico com dolomita, com bastante calcário, algo de argila, com zonas com mais sílica. Nas partes mais baixas, mais aluviões. E, nas planícies, apenas se plantam maçãs. O clima é bem continental, absurdamente seco e ensolarado (90% da região tem sistema de irrigação, usado apenas em caso de emergência no verão). O vento Ora sopra o ano todo, na primavera vem morno do sul e no verão tempera a região.
They work several white grape varieties, but the Gewurztraminer grape is iconic to the winery, making wines full of expression and minerality. The vineyards are near the Alps, and in some regions we can see its peaks. The volcanic soil with dolomite, has plenty of limestone, some clay, with areas with more silica. In the lower parts, there is more aluvial soils. And on the plains, they only grow apples. The climate is continental, absurdly dry and sunny (90% of the region has irrigation system, used only in case of emrgency in summer). The “Ora” wind blows all year round, in the spring it is warm and in the summer it makes the region less hot.Pudemos degustar uma gama gigantesca desta vinícola que, além de fazer um trabalho revolucionário em termos de cooperativa, é lindíssima na arquitetura que privilegia a paisagem local. Ela é toda de vidros de onde, pelo lado de dentro podemos apreciar toda a beleza do ambiente externo. Enfim, fomos recebidos pelo responsável pela comunicação e pelo enólogo, Willi Sturz, enólogo, eleito melhor enólogo da Itália pelo Gambero Rosso, mais importante publicação italiana sobre vinhos. Foi uma super degustação de 20 vinhos pra lá de expressivos.
We were able to taste a huge range of wine that, in addition to a revolutionary work in a cooperative, has this beautiful architecture that favors the local landscape. From its big windows in the inside we can appreciate the beauty of the external environment. Finally, we were hosted by the the person responsible for the communication and the winemaker, Willi Sturz, named best winemaker in Italy by Gambero Rosso, the most important publication on Italian wines. It was a super tasting of 20 wines incredibly expressive.

- “T – Bianco” 2010: discreto, com um toque de pêra em calda. Na boca é sequinho e cremoso, com bom frescor, mas bem simples. Discrete, with a touch of pear in syrup. The palate is crisp and creamy, with good freshness, but very simple.
- Pinot Grigio 2010: bem delicado, com notas de maçã e algo floral e um toque mineral. Na boca é simples, quase diluído, um finalzinho quente, apesar de ser fácil de tomar. Very delicate, with notes of apple and a touch of something floral and mineral. In the mouth is simple, almost diluted, a very hot end, despite being easy to drink.
- Moriz Pinot bianco 2010: . Moriz é uma referência a Santo Maurizio, patrono da região. Pinot bianco é uma uva muito tomada localmente. O vinho tem nariz mais neutro, com um toque defumado, tostado, algo de cal e um pouco de fruta, de pêra. Na boca é bem cítrico, com pouca acidez, boa cremosidade. Moriz is a reference to St. Maurizio, patron of the region. Pinot Bianco wines are very consummed locally. The wine has a more neutral nose, with a touch of smoky, toasty, limestone smell and something a little fruity, like pear. The palate is quite citric, low acidity, good creaminess.
- Gewurztraminer 2010: nariz bem típico de rosa branca, mas com um toque alcoólico, lembra um cognac, com um toque de leveduras. Na boca é cremoso e saboroso, cheio, com um finalzinho seco e amargo, mas elegante. Typical white roses nose , but with an alcoholicside , resembles a cognac and has a touch of yeast. The palate is creamy and tasty, full, ends with a dry and bitter taste, but it’s elegant.
Stoan (significa pedra no dialeto local). É um corte de uvas, basicamente Chardonnay, com um pouco de Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Blanc e Gewurztraminer. A idéia é dar uma noção do solo que é bem mineral. Eles fermentam o vinho em tanques e deixam sobre as leveduras até maio do ano seguinte à colheita. Stoan (meaning stone in the local dialect). It is a blend of wines, mostly Chardonnay with a bit of Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Blanc and Gewurztraminer. The idea is to give a sense of how mineral the soil is . They ferment the wine in tanks on the yeast and leave it until May of the year following the harvest.
5. 2010: é bem queimado, com cheiro de pedra e flores brancas secas. Tem toques frutados e sente-se bem as leveduras. Na boca é fresco, muito saboroso, com retrogosto tostado, lembra pedras quentes, com bastante estrutura em boca, final quente e longo com toques de mel e leveduras. Smells toasty, and has a touch of stones and dry white flowers. It has a fruity touch and we can smell the yeasts. The palate is fresh, very tasty with roasted aftertaste reminders of hot stones, with enough structure in mouth, long and hot ending and with a touch of honey and yeast.
6. 2006: é o mais exótico e expressivo, com aromas de geléia de laranja, um pouco de areia. Quando ganha temperatura, mostra mais o tostado e uma nota exótica de abacaxi com coco. Na boca é muito fresco e frutado, é bem firme e estruturado, cremoso, mas fino, com um final crocante, longo, lembra café e tem força alcoólica. It’s the most exotic and expressive, with aromas of orange marmalade, and a smell of sand. When it gets wramer, shows a more exotic and toasty note, also pineapple with coconut. The palate is fresh and fruity, and is tightly structured, creamy but fine, very crisp, long, and reminds me of coffee, with alcoholic strength at the end.
7. 2004: um pouco mais fechado, com notas de cera de mel e pêra em calda. Na boca é bem cremoso com ótima acidez, toque doce, também tem uma nota amarga e o final é mais quente. Apesar de ser maior em boca, é mais curto. A little more closed in aromas, with notes of honey wax and pears in syrup. The palate is creamy with great acidity, sweet touch also has a sour note and the end is hotter. Despite being fuller in the mouth, is shorter.
Unterebner Pinot Grigio. É um vinhedo bem alto, fresco, com rendimentos baixíssimos, colheita de uvas bem maduras, quase a ponto de colheita tardia. Unterebner Pinot Grigio. This vineyard is higher, fresher,producing very low yields, harvesting very ripe, almost late harvest type of grapes.
8. 2010: super expressivo no nariz, com notas de mel, manteiga, e fruta amarela muito madura. Na boca é cheio, amanteigado, estruturado, muito saboroso, com toques de levedura e mel no retrogosto. 2010: super expressive nose, with notes of honey, butter, and very ripe yellow fruit. The palate is full, buttery, structured, very flavorful, with hints of yeast and honey in the aftertaste.
9. 2002: uma safra que foi péssima na maior parte da Itália, aqui foi ótima. Nariz super tostado, com notas de laranja, um toque mineral que lembrava diesel, folha pisada, me pareceu um pouco de alface… Na boca é bem fresco, bem defumado, tem um pouco gosto de fermento, parece a casca de um brie, com final frutado e seco, uma nota amarga gostosa e retrogosto perfumado, com nota de brioche e alcoólico. 2002. A harvest that was bad in most of Italy, here was great. Super toasty nose, with notes of orange, a touch of mineral that reminded me of diesel, bruised leaf, maybe something a bit like lettuce … The palate is very fresh and smoked, has a little taste of yeast, it seems like the skin of brie cheese, with fruity, dry bitter note, a hot and perfumed aftertaste with notes of brioche and alcohol.
10. Montan Sauvignon Blanc 2010: bem exótico no nariz, com nota de maracujá e um toque animal e de leveduras. Na boca é cremoso, com pouca acidez, mas fresco, delicado. Apesar de não ter muito meio de boca, o final bem seco e perfumado, com notas torradinhas e de maracujá. Very exotic nose, with notes of passion fruit and an animal and yeasty touch .The palate is creamy, low-acidity, yet fresh and delicate. Despite not having much intensity in the mouth, the end is very dry and fragrant, with notes of passion fruit and toast.
Nussabaumer Gewurztramineré uma linha de alguns vinhedos que têm bastante mineralidade. Em boca são todos cremosos e frutados, com um toquezinho de açúcar residual bem delicado. Quando são jovens, a tipicidade de uva fica mais evidente, mas com os anos em garrafa, e são vinhos que envelhecem super bem, a mineralidade vai aparecendo.Pudemos comprovar isto na degustação.
11. 2010: super rosa branca, típico. Na boca é levemente doce, bem frutado, com um toque de levedura e mel, final muito longo, perfumado, com um leve toque tostado. Typical white roses nose. The palate is slightly sweet and fruity with a touch of yeast and honey, very long end, fragrant, with a light toasty touch.
12.2009: bem floral também, só que menos delicado, mais alcoólico e mais frutado. Na boca é muito exuberante, toques de manga, final quente, perfumado, longo e amargo gostoso. Also very floral, but less delicate, more alcoholic and more fruity. The palate is very exhuberant, with touches of mango, hot, fragrant, long and bitter end, very tasty.
13.2006: mais fechado, vai abrindo com notas de manga, mas sempre discreto. Este falta um pouco de acidez, tem um toque alcoólico no final, lembra um whisky, algo de milho, num estilo mais secão. More of a closed smell, opens with little notes of mango, but always discreet. It lacks a little acidity, with a touch of alcohol in the end, resembling a whiskey, something of corn, in a more dry style end.
14.2003: nariz mais verde e fresco, com um toque de maracujá, um pouco de areia e pedra quente. Na boca é super equilibrado, rechonchudo, final bem estruturado, com tudo bem fundido. Greener and fresher nose , with a touch of passion fruit, sand and hot stone. The palate is super balanced, creamy, with a well-structured end, with everything well rounded.
15. 2000: muito mineral, com notas de pedra quente, molhada, um toque animal impressionante, na boca é bem delicado, final com acidez e álcool integrados, mas já um pouco mais curto. Very mineral, with notes of wet, warm stone, an impressive animal touch. The mouth is very delicate, final with integrated acidity and alcohol, but slightly shorter than the others.

16. Maglen Pinot noir.De dois vinhedos pequenos que somam uns 3 hectares no total. O 2008 é bem mineral, com notas de giz, um cheiro de sal e baunilha. Estranho. Na boca é tânico e um pouco magro, com finalzinho que lembra aniz. From two small vineyards that total about 3 hectares. The 2008 is quite mineral, with notes of chalk, a smell of salt and vanilla. Strange. The palate is a bit thin and tannic, with a end that resembles anise.
17. Urgba Lagrein 2008: feito com a uva local Lagrein, que dá muita matéria colorante, com vinho lindíssimos, mas não é tão potente quanto o olho pode sugerir. Este vem de vinhas com mais de cem anos sobre um solo bem profundo e arenoso. O nariz é bem frutado, com muuuuita jaboticaba e um toque de baunilha. Na boca tem uma textura doce, taninos finos, mas bem presentes e em grande quantidade. Apesar de o vinho ser cremoso, o final é secão. Made with the local grape Lagrein, which gives it lots of deep colour, beautiful wine, but not as powerful in mouth as the eye can suggest. This comes from vineyards of more than one hundred years on a very deep, sandy soil. The nose is very fruity, with lots of black fruits and a touch of vanilla. The palate has a sweet texture, fine tannins, but very present in large quantities. Although the wine is creamy, the end is very dry
Terminum Gewurztraminer. É colheita tardia, sem ataque de botritis, de um vinhedo bem pequeno, logo em frente à vinícola, que forma uma espécie de bacia, onde o vento Ora não bate e as uvas podem secar sem a umidade. Não é algo comumente produzido aqui, é mais experimental. It’s a late harvest, with no attack of botrytis, from a very small vineyard, just outside the winery, which forms a sort of basin, where the wind ORA does not hit and the grapes can dry without moisture. It is not something commonly produced here, it is more experimental.
2009 é super frutado, com notas de manga e leveduras que encontramos também em boca. Apesar de faltar acidez, é fresco, super longo, com toda a fruta e um retrogosto de nozes caramelizadas delicioso. It is super fruity, with hints of mango and yeasts that I also found in the mouth. Despite missing acidity it is fresh, super long, with all the fruit and a delicious aftertaste of candied walnuts. O 2006 tem um aroma de resina, cera de mel e um pouco de fruta. Na boca é mais fresco, também frutado e cremoso, com álcool bem integrado, cheio de aromas de fruta. The 2006 has a smell of resin, wax, honey and some fruit. The palate is fresher also fruity and creamy with well integrated alcohol, full of fruit aroma.
